A home energy evaluation can save a significant amount of money over the years by finding the energy-draining culprits in your home that are not obvious to the untrained eye. As winter approaches, residents in the area tighten up their homes for the upcoming cold weather, which does save energy. However, you can take steps that go beyond closing the windows and sealing drafty exterior doors by identifying and fixing those problems that cause air infiltration.
According to the Department of Energy, cooling and heating your home consumes nearly half of all the energy used annually. Although the climate in Fayetteville is fairly mild, homeowners in this region have to heat and cool their homes to stay comfortable in the winter and summer.
Some public utility providers can conduct the energy evaluation, as can heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) companies. These experts may use thermographic scanning equipment that shows where the heat escapes or enters the building. Besides showing where the air leaks are, the thermographic images show where insulation is insufficient in the structure.
An energy evaluation may also include a blower door test, where the technicians attach a large blower in a doorway. The blower sucks the air out of the home and pulls outdoor air inside the house in places prone to leaks. Technical equipment records the leaks as black streaks. Fall and winter are ideal times for this kind of an energy audit, which requires a 20 degree difference between indoor and outdoor air temperatures.
Once you have the results of the energy evaluation, you can use the results to determine where to start sealing your home and adding insulation to retain more of the conditioned air indoors. The tests and scans indicate the intensity of the losses, making it easier to prioritize projects to tighten up your home.
